The second largest dzong in all of Bhutan and one of the most majestic and famous structures in the country.

Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel, the founder of Bhutanese state, built Punakha Dzong in 1637. It was originally named Puntang Dechen Phodrang Dzong, which means the Palace of Great Bliss. It is the second oldest and second largest dzong in all of Bhutan and one of the most majestic and famous structures in the country. The Punakha Dzong is by far the most famous sight in Bhutan, at par with The Tiger’s Nest in Paro.

Punakha Dong was built on the 8th day and 8th month of the Fire Ox year in 1673. The Tibetan attacked the dzong in 1639 and 1644. Punakha was the capital of Bhutan from 1637 to 1907 and the first national assembly was hosted here in 1953. To commemorate the victory, a New Year festival was introduced, and Yu Gyal Gonkhang Chen Mo, “the great shrine of the protective and victorious Lord” was built.

The Dzong is located between the two major rivers in Bhutan, the Pho Chhu (pho means male) and Mo Chhu (mo means female). Therefore the only way to access the Dzong is to cross the Bazam (bridge) which was rebuilt in 2008 after the original 17th-century bridge was washed away during a flood in 1958.

Most of Bhutan’s national treasures are kept inside this Dzong and it was here that the King of Bhutan His Majesty The King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and his beautiful wife, the Queen of Bhutan Ashi Jetsun Pema Wangchuck got married in October 2011. The first King of Bhutan was crowned in Punakha Dzong. Punakha Dzong remained the center of government until it was relocated to Thimphu.
